Today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, TomTom is rolling out a new feature in its free navigation app designed to make navigating while driving a whole lot easier for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Navigation apps are filled with options. We can change orientation, zoom level, use audible alerts and more, but what is there for deaf drivers? According to the WHO's projections, there will be close to 700 million individuals that will need hearing rehabilitation due to severe loss of hearing by 2050. Such numbers suggest we need deaf-friendly navigation.

From July 2022, all new vehicles brought to market in the EU must be equipped with an Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) system. For vehicles to pass type approval, they must reference speed limit data from both cameras and digital maps. Although this presents a challenge for carmakers, thankfully there are plenty of solutions available.
