Counterpoint: TomTom ranks as best overall location platform | TomTom Newsroom

In the race for cutting-edge location technology, TomTom has firmly secured pole position, coming out as the frontrunner in location applications and services in Counterpoint Research's latest analysis. For TomTom, it’s more than a win, it’s validation of its commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the road.

In its latest Location Platform Effectiveness Index, Counterpoint Research highlights TomTom's dominance in four critical areas, namely traffic, navigation, routing and infotainment. Based on its analysis, TomTom leads because these four components make or break the driving experience and play a key role in improving safety and offering new conveniences in vehicles.

“TomTom’s success is a combined effort of innovative thinking and pivoting strategically to open-source data and bringing a new wave of collaboration in mapmaking while challenging the industry status quo,” says Peter Richardson, Vice President, Counterpoint Research.

"We’re extremely proud to be leading in this space, achieving the best results in the categories that are most impactful for automakers,” says Mike Schoofs, Chief Revenue Officer, TomTom.

Indeed, Counterpoint Research recognizes TomTom for its leading hybrid navigation system, which provides reliable guidance through a combination of onboard and cloud-based tech. This approach, Counterpoint says, offers unparalleled accuracy and reliability, making it the preferred choice for industry giants like Stellantis and Volkswagen Group.

When it comes to real-time traffic, Counterpoint Research names TomTom as a leader thanks to its extensive data coverage. The mapmaker’s historical road and live traffic data, that’s available in 84 countries and over 600 million connected devices, sets it apart from the competition.

Counterpoint also recognizes TomTom’s capabilities in the digital cockpit. TomTom Digital Cockpit offers an open, flexible and modular solution that powers various in-vehicle services seamlessly. From navigation to voice assistant and location search, TomTom's infotainment capabilities are helping automakers redefine the driving experience for their customers.

“TomTom’s AI-based voice assistant for vehicles has put the company ahead of its peers like Google and HERE and complements its digital cockpit offering,” says Mohit Agrawal, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research.

“This great result is a testament to our strategy of combining the best of open and proprietary data sources to deliver enhanced solutions across maps, traffic, and navigation. TomTom is unlocking the power of collaborative mapmaking, leading to a map that is growing faster than any other," Schoofs says.

The increasing importance of in-vehicle experiences

Driving has always been an experience. From the motorized carriages of the late 1800s to the refined luxury sedans of today, harnessing fire, explosions and the power combustion engines generate has always connected us to our vehicles in a very visceral way. But as we go electric and vehicles get more advanced, the way we experience our vehicles is changing.

The in-vehicle experience will see automotive’s next big disruption: Digital cockpits

The automotive world is being forced to evolve to growing customer demands and increasing societal pressures. Drivers want true mobile app integration, not systems that piggyback the car’s IVI; they want richer in-vehicle experiences and high-level automated driver aids (ADAS). Alongside this, society is pushing the transition to electric power and for improvements in vehicle safety.

Why are there so few global mapmakers?

Think about the last time you bought something. How much choice did you have? How many companies make the thing you bought? A handful? Tens? Thousands? Think about when you had to buy something for work, a new project management tool perhaps, how many options did you have? I still bet you had a decent amount of choice.
