Logistics provider EPG helps drivers stick to their planned route, getting to more stops in less time. With TomTom Traffic, the company helps logistics firms save money and get goods delivered on time.

Logistics software and solutions provider EPG has worked with route optimization experts Greenplan since 2022, when EPG bought a strategic majority in the company. Greenplan uses industry-leading algorithms to create automatic routing and scheduling tools to help customers save costs and deliver goods on time. Customers report a 10-30% improvement in efficiency, and a reduction in costs of up to 35%, compared to their previous solution provider. Thanks to TomTom Traffic, routes are calculated including live and historic traffic data, making ETAs more accurate. The result is that drivers stick to the planned route.

Sticking to the plan

Many route planners fail because they do not incorporate up-to-the-minute traffic information into the route at the outset. EPG uses TomTom Traffic, which updates every 30 seconds.

To create its algorithm, EPG worked with the Institute of Discrete Mathematics at the University of Bonn and partnered with TomTom for the data. TomTom’s traffic data includes information some competitors lack, such as road restrictions for trucks and information on max height and weight for bridges, and more regularly updated speed profiles. EPG’s algorithm can reflect the real-life situation far more reliably than many other planners. As a result, drivers are far more likely to adhere to the route they’re assigned, and the route is truly optimized to make the greatest number of stops on one journey, safely.

An award-winning solution, loved by customers

EPG’s customers report savings of up to 35% and get a return on their investment within one to six months of implementing the solution. The algorithm has won several awards, including the Amazon Last Mile Challenge 2021. It has also been recognized by a key scientific paper.

Indeed, the impact of EPG and Greenplan’s route planning tool can’t be understated. Its impact for fleets is clear, but it also has the capacity to improve the roads for many more — making them safer and less congested.

We were able to gain a competitive advantage by having speed profiles from TomTom and using them in a unique way. The close to real-time traffic data from TomTom enables our dispatchers to act fast to real-life events, adding another advantage to our offering.
